Understanding the Complications of Diabetes
Diabetes may be considered by many as a killer disease. This is because over time, diabetes can lead to life threatening complications. Learn more about these diabetes complications and save your life through prevention.
Heart Disease
Too much glucose in the blood can lead to more fats becoming deposited in the walls of the blood vessels. This may result in improper blood flow that may in turn lead to the clogging and stiffening of the vessels. This increases the risk of heart disease.
It is estimated that people with diabetes are at least twice as likely as people without the condition to develop some form of heart ailment. It is also believed that people who have diabetes at an early age also have a higher risk of developing heart problems at an early age. Heart attacks and strokes in individuals with diabetes are said to be more serious than usual and is in fact the leading cause of death in individuals with diabetes.
Eye Disease
It has often been said that diabetic individuals have higher risks of becoming blind. Not all of them become blind though and may only have minor eye problems. The most basic eye problem involves the retina and may be easily addressed if detected early.
The retina is actually serviced by tiny blood vessels. Just like diabetic people who develop heart ailments, diabetes eye problems stem from blood vessels that become clogged because of high glucose levels. At first the blood vessels may swell. Later on new but weaker vessels may start to grow. These weak vessels rupture easily resulting in leaks that may blur vision. The situation may become worse when these vessels develop into scar tissues that can pull and detach the retina.
Kidney Disease
The kidneys normally filter waste products that are released through the urine. Useful nutrients and proteins however stay in the bloodstream because they are too large to be filtered. The high glucose levels in people with diabetes makes the kidneys work extra hard to try and get rid of the excess. Too much work performed by the kidneys may then result in leaks which may lead to blood protein particles finding their way into the urine. In time, the overworked kidneys become unable to filter waste properly and may fail altogether and waste will begin to build up in the body. Kidney disease in people with diabetes usually takes a long time to develop though, allowing for early monitoring and detection.
Foot Problems
There is no denying that diabetes may be a painful condition to bear sometimes. There are also times however when the disease may also decrease your perception of pain. This decrease in pain may be caused by nerve damage caused by high glucose levels. The feet may suffer from this kind of damage and may also experience less blood flow. When this happens, diabetic individuals may not easily feel foot injuries, wounds or ulcers. These foot problems may be unnoticed until they become infected. Some foot ulcers in diabetic individuals become so severe that they may lead to foot amputation.

Other Complications
Diabetes is no doubt a very fatal disease and it can lead to so many other diseases like heart disease kidney failure, eye disease and also foot problems. The carpets and surroundings must be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner which must be effective in cleaning. It can be bought from online shops with vacuum cleaner ratings available. Pet animals must be kept away from diabetic patient to prevent them from catching other harmful diseases such as dog allergies. Allergies are more common in diabetic patients.
