The Good News About Your Diabetes Recipe

Many food lovers think its tough being diagnosed with diabetes. The truth is you can actually enjoy the taste and experience of a good diabetes recipe.

Common Perception

Being diagnosed with diabetes for the first time can make a lot of people feel isolated at the food table. It doesn’t help that your loved ones now think too that you have to eat a special diabetes recipe every meal time. Aside from making you feel like you don’t belong, this can also be a lot of hassle for you and your family and whoever is the cook. This perception however may not necessarily be very accurate. A good diabetes recipe need not be worlds apart from every day dishes. A diabetes recipe however may have some alterations in ingredients. More importantly however, a diabetic may simply have to modify serving sizes of common dishes.

Doctor’s Opinion

Many sources will offer you a diabetes recipe or two and some tricks and tips for your diet. Your doctor however should maintain sole authority over your diet plan especially if your condition is severe. If you want to try a tip or anything new, you should run it by your doctor first. Usually though, your doctor will teach you to be a little independent by showing you how to count your carbohydrates yourself. A diabetes recipe may be helpful for you but remember that it should fit your target carbohydrate intake in a day. Eating great quantities of a diabetes recipe may still over supply your body with carbohydrates and calories.

Consistency and Control

The secret to a successful diabetes diet is controlling your urge to eat more than you should and consistently following your carbohydrate counted meal plan for the day. It is also important to remember that overeating in one meal will not be compensated by missing other meals for the day. Maintaining regular meal schedules can help regulate your blood sugar level.

Some Tips

There is no one single perfect diabetes recipe but there are some tips that you can follow for an excellent meal time experience.

  • It is not necessary to completely eliminate sugar and salt from a diabetes recipe. You may of course do that but you may also follow your doctor’s advice for regulated amounts of salt and sugar in your diet.

  • If you have decided to maintain a bland diet, do not let your family suffer the same fate. Set aside your portion of the dish on the stove before adding salt and seasoning.

  • Diets with whole grains, vegetables and fruits are recommended for diabetics. Limit your intake of meat and go for skinless chicken and fish instead of pork. For your pork portions, choose lean meat. Keep away from saturated fat as much as you can.

  • Variety is important in a meal for diabetics. You can easily provide variety by grouping together the foods and serving sizes that have the same carbohydrate count. Swap these food items in your daily meal plans.

  • Fruits in your diabetes recipe are generally good but some of them are high in the glycemic index and still convert quickly to sugar when eaten. Do not exclude fruits from your carbohydrate count and if you can help it, pick citrus fruits.
