Looking for a Sign of Diabetes in Women
Men and women may share common diabetes signs. Just like in men however, a sign of diabetes in women may not be so easy to spot. Here’s what you need to know about recognizing diabetes in women.
Recognizing a Diabetes Sign
It is estimated that more than six million Americans are unaware that they have a diabetes condition. This is because a lot of people do not show early signs of the condition until complications have developed. Some people also normally ignore an early sign of diabetes simply because they do not recognize it or they think that it is harmless. Recognizing a sign of diabetes in both men and women can help prevent serious complications that could affect the heart, nerves, skin and kidneys.
Signs and Symptoms
Aside from frequent thirst and urination, another common sign of diabetes in both genders is fatigue or a general lack of energy. Some people simply dismiss this as a normal consequence of having to face the normal grind and pressures of the day. You should be alarmed though if you are tired most of the day in most days. A general lack of desire to move and do something and an inclination to constantly recline or sleep may be alarming signs of diabetes.
Vaginal Candidiasis
In women vaginal candidiasis is another major sign of diabetes that is not easily recognized. This is because not all women who have vaginal candidiasis have diabetes. This condition is caused by the type of fungi called candida. Candida is actually found in various amounts on the skin, intestinal tract and the vagina. Normally these fungi do not harm an individual. An overgrowth of candida however can cause an infection.
In women, moisture in the vagina, irritation, hormonal changes and changes in vaginal acidity may lead to vaginal candidiasis. Some women may also increase the risk of infection if they have weak immune systems, if they are pregnant or if they are sick with AIDS. There are however some perfectly healthy women who may get the infection some time in their lives.
Vaginal candidiasis will make the vaginal area itchy and sometimes even painful. In its advanced stage, white flakes may accompany the usual female discharge.
Candidiasis and Diabetes
Vaginal candidiasis may not always be a sign of diabetes in women. You should be concerned though if you have had frequent recurring bouts of candidiasis. An episode of vaginal candidiasis that has been successfully treated but keeps on coming back may be a sign that your sugar level is high. Your gynecologist however cannot conclude this immediately as a sign of diabetes even with a seemingly conclusive FBS lab test result. The right procedure for you to follow is to ask your doctor for a recommendation to a good endocrinologist who can confirm your sign of diabetes.
Vaginal candidiasis seems to be a common sign of diabetes in women with type 2 diabetes and women who have had diabetes for a long time. This sign of diabetes can easily be treated by a combination of blood sugar regulation and a topical anti-fungal drug or an anti-fungal vaginal tablet.

Signs of diabetes may appear late thus regular checks must be performed to administer one's health. Diabetic patients might encounter symptoms of diabetes as they get very lethargic and disinterested in any activity. Such patients sometimes may take some herbal supplements to keep up their general fitness. The disease also shows its symptoms as the patient gets clumsily overweight. For weight loss the patient must visit a proper doctor to rightly control the disease. Patients with severe diabetes generally encounter eye related diseases and are thus advised not to wear contact lens since lenses can cause a wound or minor hurt inside the eye which can cause complication in a diabetic condition.
